Sacramento State and Sierra College Satellite Campus Progress

Sacramento State and Sierra College are collaborating to establish a satellite campus in Placer County, California, known as the Sacramento State Placer Center. This initiative aims to provide accessible higher education opportunities to the region's rapidly growing population.
Location and Development
The Placer Center will be situated within the 2,213-acre Placer One master-planned community, located along Highway 65 near Roseville and Rocklin. This strategic location is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic development and educational advancement in the area.
Partnership and Planning
In June 2024, Sacramento State President Luke Wood and Sierra College Superintendent/President Willy Duncan formalized their partnership by signing an agreement to develop the satellite campus. This collaboration aims to create a seamless educational pathway for students, allowing them to transition from Sierra College to Sacramento State without changing campuses.
Projected Enrollment and Facilities
The initial phase of the Placer Center is designed to accommodate approximately 1,500 full-time students, with plans to expand to 12,000 students within 15 years. The campus will feature a forensic science lab, conference center, and performing arts center, enhancing the educational experience and serving as community resources.
Construction Timeline
Infrastructure work for the Placer One development, including roads, utilities, and other essential services, commenced in October 2022. Construction on the first homes within the Placer One community is scheduled to begin in early 2024. The first phase of the Sacramento State Placer Center is anticipated to begin construction within the next five years, with the campus opening expected within the next decade.
This collaborative effort between Sacramento State, Sierra College, Placer County, and Taylor Builders represents a significant investment in higher education infrastructure, aiming to meet the educational needs of Placer County's residents and support the region's growth.
Progress of this project as of Feb 18th, 2025
As of February 18, 2025, the Placer One development, encompassing the future Sacramento State Placer Center and Sierra College Transfer Center, is progressing through its initial infrastructure phase. This phase includes the installation of essential utilities such as roads, water, sewer, and electrical systems. Notably, the sewer line project, a critical component of this infrastructure, was approved by the Placer County Board of Supervisors in May 2023, with a budget of $28 million allocated for its completion.
Regarding housing within the Placer One development, construction is anticipated to commence in early 2025. This timeline aligns with the broader development schedule, which envisions the construction of over 5,500 homes, along with retail and recreational facilities, over the coming years.
While the infrastructure groundwork is underway, the Sacramento State Placer Center is still in the planning stages. The center is projected to serve approximately 1,500 full-time students in its initial phase, with plans to expand to 12,000 students within 15 years of opening.
